Having fun at work has the ability to increase skill levels, improve employee resiliency, and encourage optimism, which in turn leads to better attention on tasks according to a study of 206 managers published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior. The surveys had managers rate fun activities, their own bosses' support for fun, their attitude, and informal learning at their restaurants.

Practical Tips: Emailing Your Resume

Make sure your resume gets read by following these tips from BottomLineInc.com:

Paste your resume into your email to make sure the recipient reads it.
Many companies are limiting and/or prohibiting downloads due to the increase of computer viruses.
Swap out typestyles that will get lost in the copy/paste process like boldface or underline.

My manager and I have one-on-ones scheduled every other week which is great in theory. The reality is that they always get cancelled or we have an ad hoc conversation about an issue that seems to “count” as our check in. I don’t want to be a pest but I’d like to have more interaction with my manager. Any suggestions? M.A., San Diego, CA

Be careful about making stories out of two disparate behaviors—especially disempowering stories. Confirming that your regular status meetings are scheduled is not the behavior of a “pest.” The fact that you’ve had these meetings in the past suggests that it’s your manager’s preferred way of staying connected to you.
