Strategic Complaining

Complaining is one of those behaviors that can easily take on a life of its own. Whether it’s environmental (“it’s too hot in here”), “hall monitor” behavior (“Sue is surfing the web for personal reasons all day”), or personal complaints (“I have to work on the weekend”), complaining does serve a useful purpose. According to Robin Kowalski, psychology professor at Clemson University in South Carolina, when people air their complaints they receive validation that the issue is real and they can move closer to a solution. Furthermore, work settings with the highest morale and greatest collegiality are those where “people can feel free to respectfully complain.”

Many people get the blues on Sunday night as they anticipate the work week. In fact, in a recent British survey, workers reported they didn’t even smile until 11:15 on Monday morning. Their work habits reflected their attitude with almost half of employees showing up late to work on Mondays and performing just 4 hours of actual work over the entire day.

Good thing you’re not firing him because your company probably created this situation :) When recruiting, it’s important to think about what type of situation a candidate is coming from, especially when they are a senior executive.
