Selling In Your Ideas

As you go up the corporate ladder, it’s important to master the skill of selling your ideas. In a small team, everyone understands the utility and benefits of a new idea because they are all heavily involved in executing projects. However, management can kill important projects if they aren’t properly prepared and informed about how these projects can help the company.

Determine your sell-in strategy. Do you need to gather consensus from influencers before introducing your idea to the broader team of executives? Or is a “big reveal” in front of everyone more in line with the culture of your company? Should you have people on your team sell in the idea to their counterparts to ensure a groundswell of support?

Time for a Self-Audit

The end of the first quarter is an ideal time to assess your progress—or lack thereof—against your goals. And if you don’t have goals, it’s time to set them!

People often stay too long in their jobs because they like the people, are comfortable, or out of sheer inertia. The problem is that they’re not making a conscious choice; one day they wake up and realize they’ve overstayed and need to move on.

Nice to know you’re non-judgmental! You’re in a common situation—when push comes to shove, relationships usually trump competence. It’s not fair and neither is the world.

Ratchet down the judgment—the situation is what it is. To reduce the drain on your energy, try to reframe the situation to look for what the “moron” brings to the party beyond a conduit to your boss.
