We’ve all experienced it. Our boss seems distant and a little cold. A call we expect doesn’t come. We pitch for business and hear…crickets. In no time we’re convinced that it was something we did—or didn’t do. We wonder what went wrong? We get down in the dumps and drag others along with us. It is a tremendous energy drain. And the fact is, we don’t have the facts to support our conclusions.

I have cancer and must be out of the office for treatment and other appointments. My supervisor is aware of my situation but I've asked him to keep it quiet because I don’t want to talk about it. How do I handle teammates who make me feel guilty for being out so much? M.R., San Francisco, CA

Answer:

It’s rare in a situation like yours that the truth doesn’t come out. Prepare for that eventuality by crafting a response that is true but also establishes a boundary that you’re comfortable with. Perhaps it’s something like, “I appreciate your concern. As you can imagine this is very emotional for me. Work helps me concentrate on other things and I’m happy for the distraction because I don’t want to talk about my health.”
