Curating Content

“Content curation is the act of discovering, gathering, and presenting digital content that surrounds specific subject matter,” according to Eileen Mullan of EContent magazine. Chances are good that you’ve done this for yourself by subscribing to RSS feeds, monitoring specific keywords, reading certain blogs, and checking in regularly on the social media platforms you enjoy. While this can make your information gathering more efficient, it also has a dark side…in most cases, you’re reinforcing your own viewpoint instead of expanding it.

When we expose our thinking only to those who share our point of view, we can become rigid, biased, and less able to compromise…none of which is good when we’re working in diverse workplaces and are charged with innovating and solving problems productively.

Practical Tips:
Email Overload

According to the McKinsey Global Institute, the average “knowledge worker” spends 28% of their time on email. Annualized, that’s 73 full days each year spent emailing. Do your part to reduce the burden by:

  • Stop being polite. If your reply email is, “Thank you,” knock it off. That goes double for people who automatically “Reply all.” Every email generates an average of two responses. Make sure yours add to the conversation.

You’re right, time is a precious commodity. Before you take action, think about why your peer has this habit. Does he need reassurance that his thinking is accurate? Is it his way of building consensus or rapport? Does he just like to talk?
