You’ve undoubtedly noticed that attention spans are shrinking with all the external stimulation we’re exposed to. It’s pretty rare now to be in a meeting where no one is multitasking. It is now a competitive advantage to be able to spend concentrated time without being distracted. More importantly for you, most experts agree that the ability to focus is crucial for the achievement of your goals.

The good news is that the ability to focus is a skill and like any skill, practice and patience leads to mastery. Not surprisingly, the best step to take is to “single task” as often as you can regardless of where you are.

Looking back and wishing you’d made a different choice can be a useful tool—assuming you don’t use it to punish yourself. In fact, according to Neal Roese, a professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management, regret is actually recognized by human brains as a positive influence on future behavior. What you learn from regret can affect all your decision-making.

To make being regretful more productive, first be aware that answers are always clearer in hindsight.

Not knowing your circumstances makes it difficult to give specific advice. However, typically you would start with damage control and then fix the problem. If you don’t know how to fix the problem, lay out your best guess so that when you go to your manager you can suggest a solution.
