Confuse, You Lose
As the holiday season approaches it’s a good idea to construct the message(s) you want to communicate to family, friends, and industry acquaintances. Are you looking for a new job? Hoping to get invited to speak? Interested in reinforcing your “brand”? As you can imagine, your message would be different depending upon the situation. One of the benefits of the holidays is that there are usually a lot of gatherings within a short period with people you don’t necessarily see all the time. It’s an ideal time to get your message out. The most important rule to remember—and the most difficult—is to simplify. “If you confuse them, you lose them” is a selling truism for a reason. Think about what is most important about what you’re looking to communicate and then follow these steps:

Most job seekers don’t understand that they can influence the interview even after it’s over. Follow-up communication needs to demonstrate why you are the right person for the position and remove any objections that may have been raised. Sending a typical thank-you note is just not going to cut it.
When you leave an interview, take a few minutes to jot down the
topics discussed and any issues that were raised.
