Ageism
There is no question ageism exists, so listen up even if you’re still a young whippersnapper. In our culture, youth is good, age is bad. Yes, it’s unfair and illegal but that’s irrelevant. Ageism exists, and people often compound the problem themselves. That’s a very good thing. Why? Because changing yourself is within your control. Your goal is to alleviate any concerns (stated or unstated) that your management or a potential interviewer has regarding older workers. Generally concerns cluster in three areas: older workers are past their prime, more costly and/or inflexible particularly as it relates to technology. Just as with any truism, there are grains of truth in these biases. Take a look at yourself and determine what you can do to combat age-related prejudices.

Practical Tips: Communicate Your Numbers
When you’re in the thick of things, it’s common to lose sight of the fact that others are not as aware of the importance of your projects as you are. It’s easy to get swept up in the details. When a senior staffer asks about a specific project, they are often barraged with a bunch of details. These details may reflect your reality but they don’t answer their questions appropriately. Responding in such an elaborate manner will position you as a tactician, not a strategist.
