Dealing with an Abusive Boss
We all have our beliefs regarding what behaviors are appropriate to the
workplace. When there’s a bully in a leadership position, it can strike terror
among team members, especially those who were brought up by adults who didn’t
lose emotional control. When bullied by their manager, high performers tend to
assume responsibility for their bosses’ behavior, e.g., “If only I’d done x, y,
z, this wouldn’t have happened.” Or their self-worth gets tangled up in how
they’re being treated by their superiors, which negatively affects their
confidence. After a while this can lead to a downward spiral where the former
high performer is negatively affected by the situation—physically, emotionally,
and mentally.

Practical Tips:
Smart Jargon
One of the ways the workplace has changed is that employers are a lot less interested in what you’ve done in the past and a lot more focused on the results you can deliver now. Some examples of power verbs include: lead, develop, establish,
sell, create, teach, manage, drive, restructure, and sometimes,
help.
