You’d think we’d all be experts at creating and managing teams, given the volume of advice available on the topic! While it’s not the norm, I believe that successful teams are not dependent as much on hiring great people as it is on firing the mediocre.

When you have high performers, competent workers, and mediocre people on a team, what happens? The high performers almost always compensate for the mediocre, which limits the overall performance of the team.

Most of us have realized by now how much people like to talk about themselves. In fact, on average, we make ourselves the topic of conversation 30-40% of the time. And it’s not necessarily because we think we’re the cat’s meow. A study conducted by Diana Tamir and Jason Mitchell from the psychology department at Harvard University found that humans actually get a biochemical buzz from self-disclosure.

My company has brought in new management and I am shocked by their behavior. They have fired long-term (10+ years) employees while they’ve been out on vacation, have rescinded vacation days, said one thing in team meetings and done the exact opposite. I’m freaked out because I need my job and am not sure what is going to happen next. Suggestions? E.E., New York, NY

It’s not unusual for new management to shake things up but in your case it sounds different than that. They’re not just switching out people, they’re making policy changes. I think your instincts are correct and the best course of action for you is to prepare for the worst.
