Cynicism has become very fashionable in our society. After all, it’s hard to be disappointed if you already expect the worst of everyone. Cynicism in the office though, leads to politics, and in very short order it can change the entire culture of a company.

What leads to cynicism? There are three main reasons: lack of communication, lack of respect, and different standards for different people.

Studies on dual-brain psychology have shown that when a right-handed person looks to their right, their brain’s left hemisphere is activated. The left hemisphere is where you calculate, track, and store information. The right hemisphere stores autobiographical and emotional memories, which are mostly negative.

Managing how others perceive you is critical—you never know who you may end up working with again, so leaving people with a good impression is important. This is not the time to air your grievances, be overly emotional, or insult your bosses—you’ll hurt your reputation.
