Conflict Resolution

Handling conflict well is a critical management skill. Knowing what to do when conflict arises makes it less stressful to deal with, and you’ll also get a better outcome. Regardless of the issue, there are four steps you can take to make sure that you are solving the right problem.

When someone is angry, emotion is high and logic is low. Your first goal is to get the person to calm down. But telling someone to “calm down” usually has the opposite effect, so instead, let them vent briefly.

It’s important not to take anything they’re saying personally—which is difficult but necessary.

How do you think your boss will view you when the promotion is offered and you say you’re not sure you’re up to the challenge? Essentially you’re criticizing her evaluation of your performance and exposing your insecurities. Remember that her reputation is at stake here too.
