Practical Tips: Incorporating Humor

Humor is an often underrated management tool. Used appropriately, humor can help build relationships, diffuse tension, manage conflict, refocus conversations, and stimulate create thinking. “Appropriate” is the key concept here.

  • When using humor, be sensitive to people’s moods—if they are very upset, they will interpret humor as a sign of disrespect.

    Your question is full of assumptions—the job you “really want” will require a pay cut, your current situation cannot be improved, and your only option is to defer your career happiness. If these are true statements I can see how you’d be depressed. However, I question why you are choosing to cede control of your situation rather than take action to make it better.
