In order to create, problem solve, and explore new avenues effectively we need to have, or feel that we have, a certain level of security or safety. If we’re afraid to fail or worry that our job is in jeopardy, it is virtually impossible to fully access our potential. Some people can create a sense of security for themselves regardless of their environment. They are the exception, not the norm.

With so much in our world being uncertain, how can we create that feeling of safety? What can we do to help ourselves—and others—so that our energy is focused on what we can control, rather than worrying about things that may never happen?

Practical Tips: Document Your Wins

We’ve all been there. Performance review time rolls around immediately after a project you’ve worked on didn’t go well. Rather than finding yourself at the mercy of the “recency” effect, make a practice of creating a record of your performance so that you can accurately capture exactly how you’ve contributed throughout the entire year.

My boss has no life outside of work and is constantly sending texts, emails and phoning outside of work hours. How do I deal with this? J.S., Nashville, TN

Answer:

I understand your frustration and would first caution you about judging your boss’s behavior and assuming that he/she “has no life.” Whether or not it’s true, it’s not your business. Judging takes your energy and provides no upside. It’s also apparent to others—and most likely also felt by your boss whether you’ve actually said anything directly or not. Any way you look at it, you lose.
