Leverage Storytelling

Remember how great it was when you were a kid and someone told you a story? No matter your age, storytelling is a great way to get your point across while creating a connection with another person. We all remember stories even if we can’t remember who told them to us. The information gets passed along because there was something in the story that caught our attention. Use this human tendency to your benefit in the workplace.

You may be thinking, “I have no stories.” Not true. Everyone has them, they just aren’t thinking strategically about them. Almost anything that happens to you can create the basis for a good story, especially if it’s relatable. Use an experience that most of us have had to illustrate a point you want to make. Or create a demonstration of a concept you want to share. Solve a business problem using stories.

Practical Tips: Consider a Mastermind

The concept of a Mastermind has been around since the 1900s when it was introduced by Napoleon Hill in his classic book, Think and Grow Rich . He defined it as, "The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony." Essentially you join with others who have the same goal, and who are not in direct competition with you/your company, in order to provide yourself with support, accountability and problem-solving partners. It’s like having your own personal board of directors.

Question:

To others I appear very self-confident but I have a nagging sense that I'm not good enough. It's affecting my decision-making because I choose to stay "safe" by not extending myself and taking on new projects. Advice? P.B. Santa Fe, NM

Amanda Mitchell
Answer:

The good news is you’re aware of what you’re doing to yourself with your negative self-talk. Awareness is always the first step when you seek to make a change.

If you want to remain “safe” your strategy is unlikely to succeed. Hunkering down and working hard to prove your worth, while sound in theory, is not often effective in practice.
