Career Planning: Play the Long Game

Career planning is an excellent place to play a long game: remaining focused on achieving your long-term objective. In practice it often means you do things in the short/medium term that appear beneficial to others rather than to you, but you do them because in your long-term plan they will lead to your success. Of course, this assumes you have a long-term plan, but that’s another topic!

Networking is an excellent example. As you build your network, stay focused on how you can help others achieve their goals. The career benefit to you may not be obvious, but in the long term that person might be able to provide a crucial piece of information or introduction for you.

Well, it sounds like she has a good deal—she gets to avoid doing work and gets to act out too! While I can appreciate the level of frustration you must be feeling to willingly take on her work, by doing so, you’re actually reducing the chances that something will be done about her behavior.
