Prime Your Mind

We all have an inner voice—a monologue we have with ourselves, consciously or unconsciously. It’s the source of the “gut feel” we get when we make a decision that we can’t rationally support but just know is correct. It attempts to keep us from being disappointed (“If I don’t get the job there will be another chance”) and tries to keep us safe (“Only an idiot would try to jump that…”). Unfortunately we also have a negative voice inside that can wreak havoc with our self-esteem—our inner critic.

Our inner critic is the part of our personality that doesn’t want us to change. It uses negative thoughts to encourage self-defeating and self-destructive behavior. “I can’t do anything right,” “No one will want to listen to my ideas,” “I’ll never get promoted.”

Practical Tips:
Company Culture

Too often job seekers research everything but one of the most important predictors of their happiness at a new company—how they fit with the prospective employers’ culture. When you’re doing your research, make sure you ask specific questions to get a sense of what the company values.

Use your LinkedIn network to find people who currently work at the company and ask them what it’s like to work there. Do they spend a lot of time in meetings?
