Revive Your Resolutions

Millions of us made resolutions for the New Year…and one week into it, many of us will probably have abandoned them already. The good news is that willpower is a skill, and like any skill you can strengthen it.

Studies suggest that glucose affects willpower; when levels are low, it’s harder to stay on track. Continually accessing your self-control throughout the day depletes glucose. Therefore, prioritize and limit the number of times you need to exert your willpower throughout your day.

Starting small is a good first step. Ambition is great but not when you’re making a behavior change. A series of small changes that lead to the bigger change you desire is a much surer path to success.

Practical Tips:
Nature Deficit

Too much time spent on focused activities like work leads to a form of brain fatigue researchers have labeled as “nature deficit.” The term was originally coined by author Richard Louv, who wrote about the stunted academic and developmental growth that occurred in children who lacked routine contact with nature and were over-attached to devices.

The fix is simple. Spend time in natural settings to improve your overall attitude and performance. With short winter days and limited time, plan outdoor adventures on the weekends or visit indoor arboretums to get your mega-dose of nature.
