Stuck-at-Work Syndrome

One of the most common complaints heard about corporate life today concerns time. There’s not enough of it, the deadlines are too tight, and too much of it is spent at work. While the amount of time we have available hasn’t changed over the years, the other two statements are true and supported by data.

In the past lower paid workers were the ones putting in the most time at their jobs, but as our economy has shifted towards a knowledge and technology focus, it is management that is routinely putting in 50+ hours per week.

A major drain on time at work is communication. According to a McKinsey survey, fully 25% of executives at large companies say that communications—email, voicemail and meetings—are nearly or completely unmanageable. Nearly 40% of the 7800 managers surveyed spend a half to a full day per week on communications that are not important.

Question:

I'm in a service business and the client loves me. However, I want to be less of a day-to-day contact and more of a strategic partner. How can I get my client to see me differently without alienating her or diminishing our relationship? B.B., Denver, CO

Assuming you have a strong person to take on the day-to-day contact, start putting him/her forward and deferring to them on any operational topics in meetings with your client. If you don’t have a strong operational person, make it a priority to find and train one.
